Soufiane Zarib was born and raised in the medina of Marrakech, the son of a respected rug dealer, surrounded from childhood by the textures, colours and stories woven into each piece. What began as a family trade became a personal passion. Every piece is sourced in person and judged by hand. Soufiane will never sell a rug that is not authentic, or that is not in good condition — that promise is the whole business, and it is why people come back.
How to Choose a Beni Rug
Four things to look at before you buy a Beni Ourain rug — the same checks Soufiane makes when he selects a piece for the collection.
Measure the room first
Beni rugs are made in generous sizes — ours run from about 3 × 2 m to 4.7 × 3.7 m. In a living room, leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around the rug and let the front legs of the sofa sit on it.
Feel the wool and pile
Authentic Beni Ourain rugs use undyed Atlas Mountain wool rich in lanolin. The pile should feel thick, springy and slightly greasy, never dry or plastic — and the ivory should be natural, not bleached white.
Turn it over
A hand-knotted Beni rug shows individual knots on the back, slightly uneven lines and edges that are never perfectly straight. A machine-made copy has a perfectly regular grid or a glued backing.
Plan for easy care
Vacuum without the beater bar, shake or rotate the rug a few times a year, and blot spills straight away. Every few years, a professional wash brings the wool back to life.

Each rug is one of a kind, so sizes vary piece by piece. Our current Beni rugs run from about 310 × 205 cm to 470 × 375 cm, and the exact size is listed on every rug.

Beni Rugs by Soufiane Zarib
Beni rugs — known in Morocco as Beni Ourain rugs — are hand-knotted in the Middle Atlas by Berber artisans whose families have worked the same vertical looms for generations. Every carpet in this collection is made from 100% natural Atlas Mountain wool, sheared in spring, washed in river water and spun by hand before a single knot is tied. Nothing is bleached, nothing is machine-made, and no synthetic fibre ever touches the loom.
What sets an authentic Beni Ourain rug apart is its restraint. The field is left the natural ivory of undyed highland fleece, and across it the weaver draws a loose lattice of charcoal diamonds — a lozenge language that records births, journeys and protection, remembered rather than drawn. Because the pattern lives in the weaver’s memory, no two hand-knotted Moroccan rugs are ever identical, and the small irregularities that run along the selvedge are the signature of a human hand rather than a fault.
