How to Choose a Tuareg Mat
Four things to look at before you buy — the same checks we make when we select a mat for the collection.
Pick the right size
Tuareg mats are made large — ours run from 2.7 × 1.8 m to over 5 m long. Under a dining table, allow at least 60 cm beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the mat.
Check the plaiting
The reed stems should lie tight and even, with no gaps or loose ends. Motifs are made by wrapping leather and fibre around the reeds, so they should feel part of the weave, not glued on.
Look at the leather
The leather binding around the edges holds the mat together. It should be stitched firmly by hand, supple rather than cracked, and continuous along each side.
Plan where it lives
A Tuareg mat suits living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and covered terraces, or hung on a wall. Keep it out of rain and standing water — reed and leather like to stay dry.

What Is a Tuareg Mat?
A Tuareg mat is a large, flat floor covering hand-plaited from natural reed and bound with leather. It comes from the Tuareg, the nomadic people of the Sahara and the Sahel, who have made these mats for generations to line the floors and walls of their tents. Long reed stems are laid side by side and tied together with leather strips and plant fibre, and the edges are finished with a hand-stitched leather border.
The patterns — diamonds, crosses, stars and bold bands — are created by wrapping the reeds in leather and dyed fibre as the mat is made. Colours stay close to nature: the warm gold of dried reed, brown and black leather, with touches of red, orange or turquoise. Because every mat is made by hand, without a loom, no two are ever the same and small irregularities are part of their character.
Today, Moroccan Tuareg mats are loved by interior designers for their texture and graphic presence. Laid under a dining table, in a living room or on a covered terrace, a Tuareg mat brings warmth and a natural, sculptural surface underfoot; hung on a wall or behind a bed, it works as a striking piece of textile art.

How do I clean a Tuareg mat?
Vacuum gently without the beater bar or brush it with a soft brush, and shake it out from time to time. Wipe spills straight away with a dry or barely damp cloth — never soak the mat or put it in water.
Can I hang a Tuareg mat on the wall?
Yes. Their flat, lightweight structure makes Tuareg mats ideal as wall hangings or headboards. A wooden batten or rod fixed along the top edge spreads the weight evenly.
